Becker's Hospital Review Names SGCMH "150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare" for Third Year

Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) was recently named among "150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare" by Becker's Hospital Review. This marks the third year for this distinction.
“We are extremely excited,” said Tom Keim, SGCMH CEO. “I think it speaks to the entire facility. It’s not just one person or group of people--it takes a family to create a culture that really endorses taking care of people, and that’s our main objective. At the same time we want our employees to feel that they are appreciated and that they have a say in the direction of where our hospital is going.”
Keim pointed out that hospitals across the nation, big and small, competed for this award.
“When you look at the hospitals and healthcare systems that are awarded this designation throughout the nation, we are ranked up there with the top places people would consider in healthcare—like Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General or Cleveland Clinic--names that are known for not only quality medicine, but now are recognized for one of the top places to work in healthcare,” said Keim. “To think that Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital is in the same conversation with hospitals that are seen as leaders in treating their employees well speaks volumes to what we’ve been trying to establish here. We talk about all the improvements that we’ve made over the years, but that’s bricks and mortar. It takes people to deliver that personalized care where you put people first, and that’s what we try to do day in and day out.”
SGCMH has nearly doubled its workforce in the past 10 years.
“When I first came here we were just over 200 people,” said Keim. “When you start adding doctors and services, and expanding what you’re able to provide in your community, it takes people. As we’ve added people, our goal has been to make it a good environment for them. I think that when you walk down the hospital halls you see pride in the fact that our employees enjoy providing good healthcare in our community.”
Keim said that being recognized three times for the Becker award demonstrates consistency.
“You don’t want to put these practices in place for one event or for one year--you do it day in and day out,” he said. “I’ve always lived by a mantra of sorts myself, and that’s to go out and be the best thing that happened to somebody today. When it comes down to it, if it’s your grandmother, your spouse, or the most important person in your life, you want that person to have an “always” great experience. That’s what we want for our patients. Throughout the year I get so many letters from patients who talk about those special experiences. They appreciate the staff making them feel that they were taken care of like family.”
Sarah Kelly, Director of Human Resources at SGCMH, said the hospital is committed to a positive culture that promotes and values the well-being of all employees.
“Being named among Becker's '150 Great Places to Work affirms our efforts as we recruit and retain the best, brightest and most engaged healthcare professionals.”
Keim emphasized that he is proud of the incredible team that sets Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital apart as a great place to work.
“I can’t say enough about the dedicated people that I have the privilege of working with who really go above and beyond, and make this facility what it is,” said Keim. “We’re a team and we work together as a team. We appreciate the role that everyone played in delivering great healthcare for our community and helped us achieve the 150 great places to work in healthcare for the third time.”
