The Friends Foundation at Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) held the first of two golf tournaments this summer Friday, June 26 at the Castle Ridge Golf Course in Festus. Judging from the positive comments from players, the course lived up to its billing as one-of-a-kind.

Union Pacific (UP), who owns and operates the course, opens the venue up to non-profit organizations only four times a year, so SGCMH was fortunate to have been chosen—thanks largely to SGCMH Board of Trustee President Rod Scherer and Mississippi Lime’s connections to UP.

Shawn Long, Friends Foundation Director, said many of the golfers remarked that they had played this course 15-20 years ago, and were very happy to be able to do so again.

Tom Keim, SGCMH CEO, welcomed participants and thanked them for their support.

“As you know Ste. Genevieve County Memorial is a stand-alone hospital,” Keim said. “We rely on community support in many different ways, not only to use our facility, but to support us in events like this. I can’t say enough about the work that our foundation does day in and day out that help us raise funds to continue to further our mission and vision of being the provider of choice and employer of choice for Ste. Genevieve and surrounding counties.”

Keim was also pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, SGCMH has been recognized as one of the top 150 places to work in healthcare.

“That really says something about the type of people we’ve been able to attract to an industry that’s all about providing personable care to our patients.” he said.

Vickie Winkler, Friends Foundation President, also welcomed golfers.

“We are very thankful for your support,” she said. “The funds that we raise are dedicated to purchasing over $570,000 in hospital improvements and new equipment. This event will help us to meet that lofty goal. I, too, would like to thank Union Pacific for allowing us to use their beautiful course today.”

The tournament started nearly a half hour early due to the threat of rain, but a few drops later in the afternoon was all that materialized.

Prior to the winning team announcements, there was a moment of silence in honor of Chipper Basler, former Friends Foundation president, who passed away suddenly last year.

“Chipper loved this event and was so committed to the Ste. Genevieve community and to Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital.”

The winning team with a score of 60 was, Ste. Genevieve Vision Care. Lakenan Insurance came in second with a score of 61; McGrath and Associates in third with 62; and Team Reidler rounded out the A flight with a score of 63. B flight winners were Basler Funeral Home in first place, Artisan Team 2 in second, Metro East Industries in third, and Bloomsdale Bank in fourth.

Special thanks was given to Bloomsdale Bank for sponsoring lunch; Robinson Construction for sponsoring drinks; Printing Company for supplying a margarita station; and Offices Unlimited for donating a golf bag for the closest to the tee contest, which was won by Jared Zipprich.

The second Friends golf tournament of 2015 will be held on Friday, September 11 at the Ste. Genevieve Golf Club. There are still team slots available. Call Shawn Long to register (573-883-7725).
