SGCMH welcomes new CFO

3/26/2015

Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital welcomed new chief financial officer Jon Branstetter to its ranks.
Branstetter, originally from St. Louis, majored in accounting from University of Missouri-Columbia and worked for the public accounting firm of BKD in St. Louis. Here he mainly audited rural hospitals in Missouri and Illinois. In fact, SGCMH was one of his first audits in 1998. Another regular auditing stop was Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. He’d been doing their audits for about six years. When their CFO left, they offered the job to Branstetter, and he held that position for ten years.
Doing audits for rural hospitals gave Branstetter a unique perspective.
“It definitely helped,” he said. “It gave me some perspective on what to look at early on to help make a difference for the hospital. In Sikeston we tripled the hospital’s cash position within the first two years after I was there.”
He sees a lot similarities between Missouri Delta and SGCMH.
“I feel like there’s a good opportunity here to look at the reimbursements and improve some of the managed care contracts.”
Today’s healthcare is very complicated, but Branstetter explained that nearly half of reimbursements to SGCMH come from Medicare and another 10% from Medicaid, so even slight improvements could make a real difference.
Branstetter said everyone at SGCMH has been very friendly and helpful. As CFO, he will also take a seat at the leadership table, a role in which he is very familiar.
“We had a similar structure in Sikeston,” he said. “I really like that. I want to help motivate people, and hopefully make a difference and bring out the best in people.”
Branstetter is in the process of relocating to Ste. Genevieve. In his off time, he enjoys following the Cardinals and Mizzou Tigers. He enjoys reading and watching a little reality TV-- American Idol, The Voice and the Apprentice being among his favorites.
“I’m excited about my new position and excited about this hospital,” he said. “Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital has positioned itself very well and its future looks bright.”
