School seniors again participated in the "Hugs for Kids" project, making
colorful fleece blankets to brighten the life of a sick child. The students
personalize each one by attaching a special message along with their
signature.
This is the seventh year
that VHS seniors have been involved with the project.
“This is a wonderful
project for these seniors, and the blankets are very much appreciated by our
young patients,” said Rita Brumfield, Chief Nurse Administrator.
The
seniors produced 36 blankets and distributed them to Ste. Genevieve County
Memorial Hospital.
Hugs for Kids is a
non-profit organization based in St. Louis. It gives fleece blankets to
hospitalized children who are in need of reassurance, love and an extra
"hug" of support. Volunteers, called "guardian angels," make the blankets by
hand.
The blanket idea began in
the summer of 2001 when Toni Pagano made her first blanket. She began with
two yards of fleece and a pair of scissors. With the help of volunteers like
the Valle seniors, she has been donating blankets to children’s hospitals
throughout the St. Louis area ever since.
