Supermarket Tour:
How to Shop Smart with Your Cart

With as many as
30,000 items in bags, boxes and cans in aisles of produce, meats and junk
food, getting the weekly groceries in the supermarket can be an overwhelming
experience, especially if you're trying to eat healthy foods. It's so easy
just to grab what's handy to make on the run, but if you're watching what
you eat to help your heart; have diabetes; want to prevent disease; or are
watching your weight, sometimes a little help is in order.
Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital Dietician Janis Biethman, R.D., L.D.
will lead a supermarket tour at Country Mart on Tuesday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m.
to show shoppers how to pick through the bad and end up with good foods in
their carts.
One of the first things Biethman will do is familiarize shoppers with
labels.
“The first thing you'll see is the label on the front of the food package,”
she said. “Manufacturers can say most anything they want on the front label,
but to get the real story, you have to look at the nutrition facts on the
back panel and understand what those facts really mean.”
The Cardiac Rehab Department at Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital will
also be present for the free tour, checking blood pressures and blood
sugars.
Interested shoppers are asked to RSVP by May 16 by calling 573-883-7743.
