COPING WITH CHANGE

Diabetes affects 26 million Americans, it is likely that we all know someone who has diabetes, and perhaps you may be the one who has diabetes. As the saying goes, “You don’t have to like diabetes; you just have to get along with it.”

Here are a few tips to make the management and navigation of your diabetes easier.

  • SGCMH professionals can provide you with education on topics such as nutrition, exercise, medication management, and coping skills.

  • The use of a blood-glucose monitor is very important in monitoring your numbers. This puts you in control and helps identify the highs and lows. It is important to speak to your doctor to identify your optimal blood sugar numbers. It is also important to know your A1C level, cholesterol and blood pressure numbers.

  • The benefits of exercise have been proven to benefit diabetes by reducing insulin resistance. Participating in regular exercise can control diabetic symptoms, prevent obesity, lower cholesterol, manage high blood pressure, and reduce stress. Before beginning an exercise program, please consult with your doctor. Ideally, 30 minutes of daily exercise has been found to be beneficial.
