Digital Mammography

The state-of-the-art digital mammography uses low dose x-rays to examine breasts and is used as a diagnostic and screening tool. A mammogram is used to assist in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. The procedure can detect changes in the breast that may indicate cancer long before any other symptoms arise. Detecting breast cancer early increases treatment options and survival rates. Our digital mammography system allows for high quality images with more specific details. Soft Touch Bio-lucent comfort pads are used with every mammography procedure.

Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) has two locations for women to receive digital mammography services.  The Bloomsdale Medical Centre (BMC) offer both 2D and 3D Tomosynthesis digital mammography.

TYPES OF PROCEDURES:

• Screening Mammogram: It is recommended for women over the age of 40 receive a mammogram annually.

• Diagnostic Mammogram: A Diagnostic Mammogram is used for those who have had either a prior Screening Mammogram or Ultrasound, with abnormal findings.

• Needle Localization for Tissue Biopsy

BENEFITS:

Because there's no waiting for film to be developed, digital images are immediately available. Patients spend less time in the exam room and rarely need to return for repeat images due to under or over exposures. The digital machine is fast, brightness, darkness, or contrast can be adjusted and sections of an image can be magnified after the mammogram is complete making it easier to see subtle differences between tissues.

A word about 3D mammography:

3D mammography also know as breast tomosynthesis is the latest advance in the fight against breast cancer. It takes pictures of thin slices of the breast from different angles and computer software is used to reconstruct the image.  It gives a much clearer picture, especially in women with dense breasts.  The best thing about 3D mammography is that it increases detection of early breast cancers by up to 40%.
