What is Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine is the specialized area of medical treatment provided by athletic trainers, physical therapists and physicians, that deals with athletic injuries and conditions. Athletes encounter a spectrum of injuries that require a higher degree of rehabilitation to enable them to continue to be competitive. Sports medicine services may be provided as a wellness model, teaching athletes how to maintain their health and prevent injuries or as a medical model to help athletes recover from injuries or chronic sports-related conditions.
About Athletic Trainers:
Athletic Trainers are skilled professionals with a bachelor's degree. Their education includes diverse instruction, including athletic injury/illness prevention and evaluation, emergency care, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, pharmacology, kinesiology/biomechanics, nutrition, pathology, and psychology. Athletic trainers must gain practical experience through clinical internships prior to graduation. Who is eligible to receive sports medicine services?
Any athlete, any age, who has sustained a sports-related injury or condition or who would like specialized instruction on maximizing their potential and minimizing their risk of injury.
What can the Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital/Mid America Rehab sports medicine program do to help treat athletes?
1. Injury Prevention-Sports physicals and wellness programs (pre-season, during season and post-season).
2. Injury Consultation-Evaluating sport-specific injuries at the school, on the field or court, or in the sports medicine clinic. Advise the athlete when to seek appropriate medical care.
3. First Aid-Provided when necessary.
4. Rehabilitation-Provided in the sports medicine clinic.
5. Counseling and Guidance-Provided when an athlete needs direction.
6. Education-Provide information to athletes, coaches and parents about stretching, strengthening, taping techniques, sport-specific mechanics, etc.
Special programs offered by the Sports Medicine Program:
- Annual Coaches Clinic and Golf Scramble
- Annual Monster Dash 5K Road Race held in October
- Sports Physicals held in spring and fall
- Athletic Trainer or Physical Therapist regularly attends home sporting events and travels to all away football games for local high schools free of charge to the schools
