bannerBlue skies, a warm summer breeze and golf balls falling from the sky made for another successful golf tournament sponsored by the Friends Foundation of Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital. Their 7th annual Charity Golf Classic was held Friday, June 25.

Keith Johnson, outgoing Friends Board Member and tournament chairman, welcomed participants and thanked sponsors.

“Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to raise the money that we do,” he said. “You always come through for us.”

keimTom Keim, SGCMH CEO, joked that there was no truth to the rumor that golfers would be standing underneath the helicopter when the golf balls were tossed.

“All kidding aside, I hope you’ve had a chance to come by the hospital and see many of the improvements that we’ve been making, not only in terms of the building, but in added services and equipment,” he said. “A lot of this is made possible by our Friends Foundation and you. You’ve supported the Friends, not only with the capital campaign, but the many events that they stage. You all deserve a round of applause.”

A few pre-tournament instructions were given as the wop-wop of Dr. Paul Salmon's R22 helicopter caught everyone's attention. The crowd assembled to the backside of the club house to watch the much-anticipated 50-50 golf ball drop. Numbered golf balls were bought for $10 each and dropped from the helicopter. The closest ball to the hole was purchased by Bishop Hermann. He split the $900 jackpot with the foundation.

There were several shouts of “birdies” and even a few “eagles” as scores remained very respectable throughout the day. By scorecard determination, Barley Automotive (pictured at right) finished in first place (57) in the four-person scramble; Cape Radiology was second (57), and Owens Minor rounded out the A-flight (59). B-Flight winners were Mississippi Lime Company in first place by scorecard playoff (65); Rottler and Huelskamp (65); and Citizens Electric in third place (65). C-flight winners were Eric Scott Leathers in first, followed by Sabreliner in second and CE contracting in third. The teams all tied with a score of 70.

It was a long day of golf, but none of the players had concerns about hunger. A steak dinner and copious varieties of desserts provided by Lu Miller, Occupational Medicine Director at SGCMH, awaited them in the club house, so everyone left a winner having had a fun day while helping the Friends Foundation.

The Friends of Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital was established in the fall of 2003. Board members whose terms expired this summer are Keith Johnson, Mike Jaegers and Ann Bonnell.
