SGCMH welcomes new orthopedic surgeon

Ste. Genevieve, MO - Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital welcomes orthopedic surgeon, Jesse Beard, D.O., to its medical staff, joining the Ste. Genevieve Orthopedics office.

Dr. Beard, a native of Farmington, MO, is excited to be back in the area, and in fact you might say he’s come full circle.

After high school he attended Southeast Missouri State University for his undergraduate work where he shadowed Dr. Scott VanNess, who is now his colleague at Ste. Genevieve Orthopedics.

Drs. VanNess, Berkbigler and the staff are excited to have him on the team and look forward to working with him.

“Dr. Beard is an outstanding colleague and I am confident he will do well in his new role,” stated VanNess.

He attended medical school at A.T. Still University Medical School in Kirksville and had his five-year orthopedic surgeon residency in Kansas City. He chose to do a fellowship at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland after his residency where he became more specialized in orthopedic sports medicine, a subspecialty he enjoyed very much.

“This was a really good experience,” said Dr. Beard. “I worked with athletes from the Washington Capitals baseball and hockey teams as well as the Baltimore Orioles.”

If you think working with pro athletes is a little high pressure, you’d be right.

“You have to think about the patient’s needs and wants, and these high-level athletes are trying to get back to the sport as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Beard. “As an orthopedic provider, though, my role is to make sure they do this safely and not put them at risk for re-injury. Sometimes you have to separate what’s best for the team and what’s best for the athlete in the long term.”

The spark of pursuing a career in medicine didn’t start until high school when he did a little healthcare shadowing, and even as a premed undergraduate he was unsure what specialty he wanted to pursue, but he was leaning toward sports medicine.

“It wasn’t until I shadowed with Dr. Van Ness that I got introduced to the world of orthopedic surgery,” he said. “So it’s great to get to come back and work with him. It was after I was exposed to the OR and seeing how you get immediate gratification in making people better is when I decided to pursue orthopedic surgery.”

Dr. Beard said there’s a major difference in the type of patient he treats.

“Patients aren’t coming to you because they’re sick, it’s because they are hurt. Usually, we can diagnose them quickly, give them a treatment plan and see them get better within a few months. That’s very gratifying.”

This 6’3” orthopedic surgeon, has always played sports and even now, when time allows, he plays some pickup basketball, lifts weights and runs.   His fiancée is an athletic trainer, so you can imagine, they have a lot in common.

Dr. Beard is very familiar with Ste. Genevieve, remembering all the rivalry when he played high school sports.

“I’ve always liked this town, and I love this hospital,” he said. “It’s a small town hospital, which I like very much. Everyone is friendly and knows each other. I’m looking forward to working at SGCMH for a long time.”
