SGCMH welcomes new physician

Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital is pleased to welcome Erika Leung, MD, internal medicine practitioner to its staff.

Dr. Leung, born and raised in Montreal, Canada, has had a passion for healthcare since she was in high school.

“In high school we all had to do a certain amount of community service each year and I chose to do mine at one of the hospitals in Montreal,” she explained. “In my teens, I spent a lot of time with the aging population, feeding them their meals, playing cards with them and reading magazines with them while also learning about why they were in the hospital. I continued to follow this passion and loved it more and more every year. I like the idea of being able to help out those in need and talk to people about difficult decisions they may have to make, emphasizing the idea of patient-centered care.”

Dr. Leung attended McGill University in Montreal and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology and a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology. She received her medical degree from Saba University School of Medicine in Saba, Netherland-Antilles and then completed her residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, MO. Her fellowship was at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts where she specialized in geriatric medicine.

Dr. Leung’s residency training in St. Louis laid the foundation for her wanting to return to the Midwest.

“I loved it so much that I wanted to come back,” she said.

Dr. Leung is looking forward to practicing in a rural setting.

“I am interested in rural medicine because I think you get to see a broader scope of illnesses and it gives you a lot of autonomy in your practice,” she said. “I am excited about the clinician support and look forward to collaborating with my colleagues and getting to really know my patients well. When I visited the hospital, I immediately felt like part of the team.
Ste. Genevieve is a very pretty town with a lot of friendly people. I am eager to become part of the community.”

When Dr. Leung is not practicing medicine she loves to travel and learn about the world and other people. She speaks English, French, Spanish and basic Chinese.

“I also love to read, hike, ski and explore different cuisines, she said. “Part of why I am excited about coming back to Missouri is that it has an amazing food scene and offers so many fun hiking trails!”

A trip to Pickle Springs will no doubt be in her future.

Dr. Leung will be practicing at Park Drive Family Health Care beginning August 1, 2018. For appointments, call 573-883-7424.
